Abel Ang is the vice president for international business and technology development at
Hill-Rom Inc., where his responsibilities include business development and external
technology sourcing for geographies outside North America.
He formerly headed the Medical Technology and Biotechnology industry groups in
Singapore’s Economic Development Board's (EDB) Biomedical Division. Singapore’s
medical technology industry has a manufacturing output of $1.4 billion and employs
6,300 people. The biotechnology industry is made up of more than 25 pharmaceutical
and biotechnology research companies which employ more than 700 people. During Mr.
Ang’stenure, he helped to secure and implement more than 20 greenfield manufacturing,
supply chain, and R&D facilities with an investment value in excess of $500 million.
His exposure to international business also includes a period where he was director of
EDB's operations in Germany. During his time in Europe, he developed EDB's
engagements with high-tech companies on a European-wide basis, including Israel. He
also worked at Novartis in East Hanover, New Jersey, developing computational models
to scale pre-clinical data for use in clinical trial prediction.
Mr. Ang is a pioneer of bioengineering education in Singapore and helped to establish the
bioengineering programs in the Nanyang Technological University and the National
University of Singapore. He continues to sit on the advisory board of the National
University of Singapore's Bioengineering Program. He has also advised the Singapore
government on its 2015 Healthcare IT master plan and its long term Science and
Technology investments.
In addition to Mr. Ang’s public and technology policy work in Singapore, he also sits on
the Advisory Board of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, which is
responsible for the economic development activities in the state of Indiana.
Mr. Ang also teaches at the MBA program of the Nanyang Business School, which has
been consistently ranked as one of the top MBA schools in Asia. In his spare time, Mr.
Ang is active in micro-finance as well as single-parent organizations in the U.S. and Asia.
Mr. Ang has a Bachelor’s in Communication Studies from Nanyang Technological
University in Singapore; a Master’s in Computational Biology from Rutgers University
in New Jersey; a Certified Diploma in Accounting and Finance from the Association of
Chartered Certified Accountants in the United Kingdom; and a Graduate Certificate in
Intellectual Property Law from the National University of Singapore.
